I haven’t heard the word Kwanzaa this year and I’m not surprised. Kwanzaa is a dying non-religious holiday that was created right after the Watts riots in 1966 and was meant to bring African-Americans together to form a sense of unity. Many African-Americans don’t celebrate the holiday (1.7% of African-Americans celebrated Kwanzaa in 2004) leaving the tough question, is Kwanzaa still relevant?
Art Whino thinks so. Artist TMNK came down for the Kwanzaa Event at the Gaylord. Read more here!

I had a discussion about this on Christmas…as long as we continue to not deal with the socio-economic class divide within the Black community, Kwanzaa will continue to become more and more irrelevant for the majority of us. Plus, Kwanzaa isn’t crammed down your throat like Christmas so to even learn about Kwanzaa (unless you come up in an environment that will expose you to the celebration) you’ll probably have to read about it which is something else a lot of Blacks don’t like to deal with.
