Diddy raised a lot of eyebrows when it was announced that he was the speaker for Howard University‘s commencement. Still, Diddy is a charmer and he killed his speech today. He cried. He laughed and he even created his own hashtag.
Diddy told the graduating class of 2014, “Howard University didn’t just change my life. It entered my soul.”
Diddy also shared several interesting tidbits about his college life. For instance, he told the story of how his college girlfriend, who was in the audience, lived in the Quad. He also shared that at Howard he discovered how his dad really died. Diddy’s dad died when he was just three years old, he told the audience. And although his mother told him one story about how his father died, he discovered the truth about his father dark lifestyle at Howard’s library looking at the microfilm of old newspaper clippings.
Diddy also spoke about dreaming big. He gave an example of how he ran the New York Marathon and how he almost didn’t cross the finish line. He told the graduates, “Don’t be afraid to close your eyes and dream.”
And it wouldn’t be Diddy if he didn’t quote a Biggie line. His speech included lyrics from Biggie’s “Juicy.”
Diddy’s celebrity friends came to support the new Dr. Combs. Along with his family in the audience, French Montana, Bow Wow, will.i.am. and BET’s Stephen Hill showed up.
Mary J. Blige was also in the audience. She dipped out right afterward, but send Diddy a heartfelt Instagram message:
Afterwards, Diddy celebrated his honorary doctorate with a brunch.
