Recap: BET’s Black Girls Rock Honors Queen Latifah, Patti Labelle, Mara Brock Akil + More

BET‘s taping of Black Girls Rock went down inside the New Jersey Performing Arts Center this weekend honoring Patti Labelle (Living Legend Award), hip-hop pioneer Queen Latifah (Rock Star Award), producer Mara Brock Akil (Shot Caller Award), tennis icon Venus Williams (Star Power Award celebrated by Chevy), community organizer Ameena Matthews (Community Activist Award), ground-breaking ballet dancer Misty Copeland (Young, Gifted & Black Award), and children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman (Social Humanitarian).

NY Fab! was in the audience and we won’t spoil the entire show for you, but we’ll give you the highlights such as Ja Rule and his wife along with Luke James, Chef Roble, DJ Cassidy (who left the awards show early) and stars from the his Netflix series Orange Is the New Black were all spotted in the audience.

Jennifer Hudson sported a new do as she performed and presented Queen Latifah with her award.

The cast of Girlfriends reunited again to present the award to Mara Brock Akil. It was great seeing the ladies together once again. Mara, girl, can we please get a Girlfriends movie?!

Hosts Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross did the honors again. And Regina subtly confirmed her split with Malcolm Jamal Warner. Catch that!

Eve performed alongside Kelly Rowland and Sevyn Streeter in what was the most memorable/entertaining performance of the night.

Michelle Williams was the one who introduced that performance.

Kudos to Beverly Bond to creating such an amazing and inspirational program and awards ceremony.

Tatyana Ali presented awards to young girls who are making a difference.
