BET’s Rip the Runway went down last night in New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom last night, showcasing the best in urban fashion. Hosted by Kelly Rowland and Boris Kodjoe, who also stars in BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, the fashion show was curated by some of the best stylists in the business – Simon Rasmussen, Kanayo Ebi, Lindsay Driscoll, Beagy and Princess Vines — thanks to Carline Balan and Michou St. Jules of Balan Inc, fashion show coordinators.
High octane performances from Trinidad James, Meek Mill – who brought out special guest Rick Ross – Omarion, and Sevyn complimented the fashions strutting down the runway.
What I loved most about the show was the synergy between the players and the fashions. For instance, Kelly Rowland’s watches strutted down the runway and her co-host Boris Kodjoe also showcased his fashion line Alfa. Also, performer Jaden Smith, who performed “Msfts Anthem,” also showcased his own line called Msfts and even brought out little sister Willow. Jaden was one of my favorite performances of the night, second to Ross of course.
Still, Rip the Runway hit a few flat notes thanks to Watch the Duck (perhaps I’m just too old for that gimmick) and Luke James, who I usually love but his laid back performance style just didn’t translate to the balcony where I was seated with other beauty and fashion writers. It seemed disconnected.
NY Fab! spies spotted Dwight Eubanks formerly of Real Housewives of Atlanta backstage in the makeup and hair room and former Basketball Wife cast member Jennifer Williams in the balcony. Also, shoe designer and singer Teyana Taylor hosted the red carpet for BET and brought Chris Brown’s ex Karrueche along for the ride.
