The rain didn’t stop thousands of students and alum of Howard University from enjoying their Yardfest last Friday. Complete with homegrown acts like Leah Labelle, Black Alley and Kingpen Slim, Yardfest seemed to get back to it’s roots — by putting on up and coming acts and showcasing hip hop’s best.
That mission was completed when Naughty By Nature stepped to the stage. (Howard has to rep for the old school as many alum come back to Yardfest. Not to mention, how horrible I feel calling NBN old school! I love them, but it is what it is!) Hosted by LowKey from You Heard That New blog, Yardfest also featured 2 Chainz, his second stint at Yardfest, who would have a special surprise in store — Drake, wearing a bright red Howard sweatshirt. The two performed “No Lie” together and after some technical difficulties and a stampede (we’ll get to that later) Drake came back on to perform “Pop That” and “HYFR.”
During Drake’s set, the recent high school graduate said he wants to enroll to the Hilltop:
I just wanna say something real quick before I go. About two minutes ago I made the decision…for the last like four months, I went back to high school. I graduated high school. So you see what my campaign is about this year, ’cause I went right to the bookstore, I’m trying to come to school with y’all.
The rain started to come down when Beenie Man took the stage and continued throughout Meek Mill’s, who brought out T.I. And although many were trying to find a nice place to stay dry, T.I. and Meek did their best throughout the downpour.
