Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) provides a myriad of human services from Head Start programs to Housing Advocacy for almost 50 years. To raise funds for the philanthropic work that they do they collaborated with Celtics coach Glenn “Doc” Rivers and TD Garden’s Garden Neighborhood Charities to give corporate sponsored teams a night to remember.
Comcast SportsNet, Eaton Vance Management, Endicott College, Peter Ebb, Ruprecht and Team H, Schochet Associates, State Street Corporation, the Fleck Family Gift Fund, Strega, The Varano Group, and the ABCD/UCB Hoop Team each contributed $10,000 to lace up their sneaks and hit the parquet complete with suiting up in an NBA locker room; green and white basketball jerseys; team photos on the floor, live shots displayed on the Garden HDX Scoreboard of their players on the court; access for family and friends in the”fan” section, and a VIP Reception and Q&A with Doc Rivers and Boston Globe Sports Columnist Bob Ryan.
What I enjoyed most about the event was the accessibility and realness of Doc Rivers he stopped with everyone to take photos, sat down with people, hugged the kids. The event went from 5pm – 10pm and he really paced himself through it. In the Q&A Session – see snippets below – he addressed every question and even went over time to get the last question. I have a new found respect for him and the game of basketball.
ABCD is hard at work for their fundraising season, next up is Field of Dreams with the Boston Red Sox September 19th, and mark your calendars for their 50th Anniversary celebration Saturday, November 2nd. They’ve got Queen Latifah coming! See details on these events here!
