The most talked about concert of the year came to town last night at First Mariner Arena (201 W. Baltimore) when rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West hit the stage for the Watch The Throne Tour. Thousands of fans poured into the arena excited to get an up close view of the duo performing individual classics and songs from the critically acclaimed Watch The Throne album.
The show started exactly at 8:50 p.m. with Kanye and Jay-Z on separate risers performing H.A.M. The actual boxes rose allowing those sitting further away to get a close view of the stars. The risers also lit up in wonderful L.E.D. displays of dogs and sharks, fitting for the rappers.
The majority of the show included both rappers performing their individual hits, sometimes together, but most of the time a part. What was perhaps the most touching part of the show (besides Beyonce throwing up the Roc) was the obvious brotherly love that the two shared for each other. Kanye looked like a kid in a candy store performing next to his rap icon Jay-Z and vice versa.
An emotional moment of the show came when the two sat down on the stage and performed “New Day,” a track from the Watch The Throne album. Kanye said it was his favorite song and the best verse he’s ever written. Kanye spit: “And I’ll never let my son have an ego.” He also threw a little shade Amber Rose’s way in the verse when he rapped, “And I’ll never let him hit the strip club/ I learned the hard way that ain’t the way to get love.”
The duo ended the night be performing “Niggas In Paris” not one, not two, but three times. The crowd was incredibly excited after the first performance of the song and thought the show was over when Jay-Z and Kanye said good night, but they weren’t done just yet. They told everyone to get back to their seats and performed the hit song one more time. What was most admirable was the show’s imagery throughout the night, which included scenes of the Civil Rights riots, Klu Klux Klan, Malcolm X and showing the struggle that blacks have faced throughout the history ofAmerica. Jay also performed with an American flag bandana in his back pocket, obviously symbolizing that him and his little brother Kanye West are living the American Dream, and we couldn’t agree more.
Jay ended the night by saying, “This is my livest time in Baltimore and I’ve had many.”
A few notables in attendance included Congressman Elijah Cummings, BET executive Stephen Hill, music executive Sean Pecas, Kevin Liles and Beyonce of course! It was a beautiful night.
