Entertainment mogul Cathy Hughes recently called out Mo’Nique and Halle Barry on their portrayal of African-American women in the limelight.
“They want to portray us as the scum of the Earth,” she told a reporter.”When you have Mo’Nique receiving an Academy Award for the worse black women that’s ever been in cinema, you realize how much positivity is needed.”

It’s a sad reality in the Hollywood business that in order to make moves and break out of the lower end of acting as a black actor, male or female, you must portray these type of characters. It is interesting that many of the Black Actors to take home Academy Awards have portrayed lower-class citizens in cinema (Hattie McDaniels, Halle Berry, Monique). I at least applaud Denzel Washington’s portrayal of a crooked cop as a noteworthy performance for AA consideration, but his portrayal of Malcolm X should have had stronger consideration for that award. But, when it’s all said and done, art form will be expressed by those who create it, and it is the choice of it’s players and audiences to make decisions that they themselves are comfortable with in the process. Obviously, Halle and Monique took that chance, and it paid off!!! I can’t hate on that…

I disagree, Halle and Mo’Nique were playing characters that are sometimes a reality in the black community. Are we just supposed to ignore them?
