Recap: The Root Wants You to Be Young and Fabulous!

Fab! Correspondent Courtney with Jacque Reid

The online publication for hip African-Americans, The Root hosted a panel discussion on being “Young, Fabulous & Female” at the Alvin Ailey Theater last night.

Moderated by television personality Jacque Reid, the panel discussion showcased talented and inspirational women such as Lois Samuels, Tracey Ferguson, Raina Kelley, Donna Byrd and Harriette Cole.

With phenomenal resumes ranging from a staff writer for Newsweek magazine to acting in the hit series The Wire, these ladies not only inspired us with their work ethic but also by their willingness to tackle issues such as the portrayal of African-American women in the media, the importance of mentors and having faith in not only God but your dreams.

The feeling in the room was not only breathtaking but it was truly a blessing just to be there. The ladies gave words of encouragement to various audience members and also stayed to socialize afterward during a cocktail reception.

By the end of the event, I left feeling like I could conquer the world if I truly believed in myself. With that being said I would like to end this post with two quotes that I will cherish from this event:

“Remember to be a blessing to someone else’s dream when you conquer yours.”

“Replace fear with a smile and a plan.”
