My Halloween night started off with a deer running into my car (ugh!) and leaving a big ole’ dent. Thanks! It ended at the restaurant turned lounge Mio (1110 Vermont Ave NW) near one of the busiest party intersections, 14th and K Streets NW.
Despite the few rain drops that wanted to fall, everyone crowded this busy party corridor in some outrageous costumes and the usual slutty ones. I decided to opt out of this year’s dressing up festivities…partly because I just didn’t have time to be creative and refused to buy another cop costume.
Still, back to Mio. It’s in a great location and is surprisingly spacious (well relatively…it seems bigger in square feet than Shadow Room and more spacious than Josephines). Like many parties catered to the urban community, Mio is a restaurant turned lounge so when you first walk in there are table areas set up to the right. This probably wouldn’t be the ideal area as temperatures decrease because it does get cooler in the front.
Still, the earthy-modern decor make for a chic atmosphere that is undeniable. The best tables seem to be enclosed in this wooden, birds-nest like room (I’m not describing it well at all). It’s right in the middle of the venue and provides views of the entire dance floor. Also, it’s slightly enclosed so your table area wouldn’t be crowded.
DJ Alizay was on the tables with Ill Will on the mic.
The VIP area was on the second floor, although it appeared that anyone could move up and down the stairs. The party was definitely more live up there thanks to the many athletes that seemed to be parlaying including DJ Strawberry and others that were unrecognizable. Perhaps everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves because of the groupies drinks, which were particularly strong.
The spot never got to capacity, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the vibe was definitely off. If it wasn’t for Alizay spinning my favorite down south songs I probably wouldn’t have shimmied at all.
I like Mio, the actual lounge, but would prefer a better crowd before I go back there again.
