Ovations for the Cure has been fighting to bring awareness to the slient, but deadly disease of Ovarian Cancer since 1995 when founder Patty Franchi Flaherty’s mother lost her battle with ovarian cancer and Patty herself was diagnosed with the disease that only last year, took her life as well.
Though tragic, the organization is not taking it’s losses lying down and have only further the importance of their message and strengthened their resolve to inform as many women as possible about early detection and research findings. Currently only out of one women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer will survive the diagnosis, and Ovations strives to change that number – drastically. Early detection is key, education is invaluable.
The Annual Couture for Cancer featured renown designer Camren Marc Valvo who was a very close friend of another Ovations supporter Carol Arrick-Wells to which the fashion show and festivities were dedicated. The celebration included a slient auction, hors d’oeuvres, and fab!ulous prizes.
The program included remarks by Beth Sheblurne of NECN, Kelly Tutthill of WCVB, Gretchen, Style Guru, Gretta Monahan, Joyce Kulmach Arts & Entertainment critic, as well as the family of Carol Parick-Wells. And from the Ovations team, Lisa Tocci, Controller of Ovations, Dr. Ursula Matulonis and a heartfelt and moving speech by Susan Patterson who runs the Ovations Outreach program.
After the talks on why this cause is so in need of support, Carmen Marc Valvo , also a cancer survivor, shared with us designs of the 80′s and current pieces which showed off the flash of evening wear – from sweeping floras to rich reds and pinks in gathered fabrics; to the gliz and glam of sequins and shimmer that really popped. The collection was well receieved and patrons were sent home with the coveted Ovations swag bag filled with supporters goodies.
This event was certainly Fab!
