Once again, hundreds of folks headed out to Jamaica, Queens on the 1st of the year for the annual Step Correct Competition at Amazura Complex. I haven’t been in the past 3 years because as I get older, it seems like the crowd gets younger, and I cant deal lol.
As always, parking is a headache in the part of town, so unless you were there dummb early, you were hikin a couple blocks to Amazura. When we entered, we were handed “VIP” bands as part of their media coverage, but drinks weren’t free, coat check wasnt free…therefore, I am still not clear where the “VIP” section was. (two thumbs down but I appreciate JKappa for lookin out)
Hot97 was one of the major sponsors so for next year, I’mma need them to get a Hot97 DJ, cause DJ Spynfo wasn’t really doing it for me. He played the same songs ova and ova, and I needed him to interact with the crowd more (i’m thinking he left his hype man at home). What made it worst is that they had Suede, some ol’ head Kappa, hosting the joint, and he’s also kindaaa sketchy. (apparently a lot of Greeks in NYC dont like him…anyone know why? comment with the scoop!)
The step teams weren’t that great this year, and this surprises me since you have to compete in several other competitions to be invited to step at Step Correct. Its suppose to be the creme de la creme, but clearly it was just creme…smh.
Zetas won…by default (no disrespect but they were the only female team). Omegas won for the first time which was HUGE for them so big up to the bruhz for a job well done! Not to be bias, but they did have a cute stroll competition before announcing the winners, and DST definitely did their thing with Elephant Man’s “Nuh Linga” dance and B’s ”Single Ladies.” (my sorors always do it best)
Although I did a couple party walks with my chapter (OO-oop Kappa Flllyyy), I’m gonna give this an event a solid C. I didn’t add the minus (-) because no matter what happens, the event coordinators must be acknowledged for being able to attract such a huge crowd. While standing on stage with the photographer (thanks again Brian!), I felt like I was looking at an Obama rally. It seemed like the number of people were endless, so that definitely speaks volumes. If we can get a better host and DJ for next year, and ensure that the teams are the “creme de la creme,” that grade can certainly go up! (but I’m not guaranteeing I’ll be there for next year’s recap. I think I’ve had enuff!)
